With spring cleaning season underway, we here at Covenant Cleaning Services thought we would share a list of low maintenance indoor houseplants that also help to clean the air!
Houseplants are great to have in every house. They help sooth you, beautify your rooms and are fun to grow and care for. They also filter out toxins inside the house like formaldehyde and benzene among others.
Houseplants increase humidity inside and release oxygen at night. However you want to pick the right types if you want a low maintenance plant that keeps itself clean while giving you maximum benefits.
So below is a list of great indoor plants that require little care, are clean to grow and removes the most toxins from the air. Most are very green, leafy plants that start out small but can grow large over time.
Spider plant

Spider plants are low maintenance, easy to grow and adaptable to a variety of conditions. They are great for removing carbon monoxide and formaldehyde in the air. Safe for pets too.
While they thrive almost anywhere, they do best in bright but indirect sunlight. Water regularly once a week. They are very clean and easy to care for. Spider plants are in the top five houseplants for low maintenance.
Snake plant

Snake plants are the most low maintenance type of indoor plant you can find! They can thrive on low light conditions and needs water only once the dirt is completely dry. In fact it is best to not water them much.
They can grow quite tall, having long sword-like leaves. They filter out formaldehyde and benzene in the air. They are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Snake plants are tops for low maintenance and cleanliness.
Boston fern plants

Boston ferns make great indoor plants. They can start out small so you can put them on windowsills. But over time they can grow large for a nice floor plant. They are also called sword ferns.
They remove formaldehyde in the air and add moisture, so they are great for bathrooms. They grow best in bright light but not direct sunlight. They love humid air, again making for a great bathroom plant.
Peace lily plants

For an indoor plant that has a bit more color and flowers, consider the peace lily. One of my favorites, it removes ammonia and acetone in the air and can thrive on low light. Keep soil moist but not saturated.
They add humidity to the air and give off oxygen. The white spathes and flower stock on top are pretty and calming, good for offices as well as homes. Best for kitchens and bathrooms. They ARE toxic if eaten by pets however.
Golden pothos plant

The golden pothos plant is a hardy, trailing vine type of plant. It is good at cleaning the air of formaldehyde and xylene. It is best in bright but indirect sunlight but can thrive in low light.
Since it is a vine you can put it on a shelve and let it grow down to the floor or across surfaces. Suitable for any room it adds lots of greenery and has a calming effect. Good for offices too.
Dracaena plant

The dracaena plant is a small shrub, great as a floor pot plant. It removes lots of chemicals in the air while providing oxygen. Use fast draining soil and do not over water. Bright but filtered sunlight is best.
They are great for home or offices in big floor pots. While slow growing they can reach 6 feet or more tall. Living for decades they are a great long life indoor plant that is almost a tree!
Rubber plant

Finally we have the rubber plant! Having wide, thick leaves it absorbs indoor toxins in the air well. The leaves are shiny, looking almost like plastic. It prefers bright but indirect sunlight. Do not over water and use well draining soil.
It produces white latex sap which use to be harvested to make latex. It also is used for treating minor cuts and infections. It is a great looking indoor plant due to it’s shiny leaves and low maintenance.
There are many more types of plants that do well indoors, but these are the top ones in most plant list for lowest maintenance and keeping themselves clean while clearing the air of toxins.
We hope you enjoyed this Covenant Cleaning Services list of top indoor houseplants to get for your home or office. Bring some calm and air cleaning into your home with some of these wonderful indoor plants! 🙂
