How To Dust And Clean Window Blinds

Hello from Covenant Cleaning Services! We hope you are having a wonderful month of March. Window blinds, including vertical blinds are an item that often gets overlooked during cleaning time.

They gather dust and dirt very slowly so it can be hard to notice. But they do get dirty and dusty over time. So how do you clean window blinds and what are the best ways to clean them? Let’s find out!

Dusting window blinds

Often the only thing blinds require to keep them clean is a good dusting. Most windows have horizontal blinds, the type that go across the window. They can be made of different materials.

The most common ones are made of plastic, vinyl, PVC, aluminum and wood. Vertical window blinds can also be made of the same materials, but also fabric and cloth.

To dust common horizontal blinds, lower the blinds all the way. Tilt the slats down closed, then use a duster and wipe them all down, starting from the top down. Any good duster will do. Covenant Cleaning Services uses Swiffer dusters.

Once you have done that turn the blinds all the way the other way and once again dust them all down from the top down. If the top edges of the blinds catch on the duster, dust left to right starting at the top.

Dusting and cleaning vertical window blinds

To dust vertical blinds, spread the blinds the full length left and right. Fold the blinds shut, then dust them down from the top down. Turn the blinds the other way and do the other side.

You also can turn the blinds open and run your duster between each two slats, dusting top down. If your vertical blinds need more than a dusting, spray a microfiber cloth with your favorite cleaning solution until damp.

With the blinds open, wipe down each blind by lightly squeezing each one with the rag in your hand and wipe down so both sides get cleaned at the same time. Dust them first to get most of the loose dirt off.

Cleaning dirty window blinds

While dusting horizontal window blinds is often all that is needed, over time they can gather spots and dirt that dusting does not remove. To do a deep clean, first dust the blinds thoroughly.

That prevents the dust from becoming mud, or a sticky mess when you apply cleaning liquid to the blinds. Mix warm water with a little dish soap and dampen a microfiber cloth with it.

Then start at the top and wipe each blind across with the cloth, top and bottom of each slat. Wipe dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth after. That will prevent dirt spots and streaks from forming from the water.

It is time consuming, but the best way to clean them well. You can take the blind assembly off the window and submerge it all in a bathtub filled with water and dish soap and lightly scrub them.

But you may bend or damage the blinds, and after drying they may have water spots left on them. Never soak wood blinds in water or use much water on them while wiping them clean as you may warp the blind slats.
