Many folks are having a long holiday weekend this week. That’s because Monday October 12th is Columbus day! It is a federal holiday so many businesses will be closed.
That includes banks and all post offices. Sorry, no mail today. Columbus day celebrates the day that Christopher Columbus and his crew on the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria ships landed in the Bahamas.
That was the start of the European exploration and colonization of the Americas. He arrived in October 12th, 1492. I bet those ships needed a good cleaning! 🙂
You can find a lot of Columbus day sales at many big stores that stay open for the holiday. So celebrate the holiday by saving money and buying cool stuff!
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Columbus Day has had a backlash recently however. Critics and Indigenous groups have pointed out that his arrival was the start of many bad things.
Such as the start of colonization, displacement, and mistreatment of Native populations. Plus the spread of deadly European diseases the natives had no protection from.
So, many U.S. states and cities have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It honors American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.
Whichever one you celebrate, Covenant Cleaning Services hopes you have a nice long holiday weekend. Go buy yourself a nice Halloween costume on sale! 🙂
