Janitorial cleaning hacks and tips

Make a cleaning checklist

Most people find it easier to visualize what they need to clean with a checklist. You can even buy cleaning checklist calendars and list to hang on the wall. It helps to break down each room and how often to clean for each task.

For example you can have a list that shows the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, living room, dining room, den and any other rooms you may have. Then below each one have a checklist of cleaning task to do, and how often.

So for the kitchen you can have cleaning task and how often to do them. Daily task would be cleaning the dishes, wiping down the counters, rinse out coffee maker and so on. Every few days maybe emptying the trash, clean inside microwave and dust top of refrigerator. Adjust it to your preferences and then stick with it!

Declutter and Organize your home

One of the best ways to cut down on house cleaning is to declutter and organize your home. Junk just takes up space and gathers dust, even making places for pest and viruses to grow. Your home will look a lot better and will be easier to clean.

Once you have gotten rid of your junk and clutter, try to keep everything in it’s own place. Consider buying some organizer trays, stackable totes and other storage systems. The more items you can keep inside totes, trays and drawers the less surface areas you have to dust and clean.

Buy and use microfiber cloths

Covenant Cleaning Services has used only microfiber cloths for many years. They cut down on waste if you normally use paper towels. The fine fibers trap and collect dirt, dust and bacteria better than cotton rags.

Microfiber cloths trap up to 98% percent of bacteria and 93% percent of viruses on surfaces. They are very soft, so they don’t scratch delicate items. You can buy them in bulk and wash them after use many times.

You can even buy them in different colors and use each color for specific tasks so you don’t mix them up. For example you can use blue ones for the bathroom, yellow for the kitchen, orange for windows and so on. Try them, you’ll be glad you did!

Dusting top to bottom

Clean from the top down

When you clean, bits of dust and dirt always falls off your rag or get pushed off the items you are cleaning. So always clean everything from the top down so you don’t have to clean the same spot twice.

Start at the very top cleaning your ceiling fans, vents, light fixtures and wall art. Then dust off tops of shelves, bookcases and so on. Clean everything in the room on down so that all the dirt ends up on the floor, which you sweep, mop or vacuum last.

Give the product time to work

Most people spray or apply their cleaning solutions onto surfaces, then immediately start wiping it off. Most cleaning liquids work a lot better if they are left on the surface for a bit, letting it eat away and loosen the dirt and grime.

Read the cleaning solution directions on the bottle and follow the time it says to leave on the surface. You will have less work and a cleaner home by letting the cleaning products work on the dirt for awhile.

Pillowcase trick for ceiling fans

Ceiling fan blades build up a lot of fine dust on the edges. If you dust them all that dust flies everywhere and down onto anything below it. If you can reach the blades with a ladder try this pillowcase trick. Get an old pillowcase and lightly spray a general cleaner inside it.

Then open the pillowcase and slide it all the way over a blade. Squeeze it lightly and pull the case off the blade. All the dust will be trapped inside the case. Now you can shake it out outside and repeat for each blade. Throw in the wash once done.

Vacuum carpets often

Modern vacuums work great, but they still don’t remove a lot of dirt deep down in the carpet. Vacuum your carpets frequently, especially if you have pets. Vacuum hallways and other high traffic areas more often.

Move the vacuum in straight overlapping lines, like you are mowing a lawn. Use the attachments to vacuum up dust and pet hair on furniture, couches and chairs. Don’t forget under the cushions!
