Hello from all of us here at Covenant Cleaning Services Orlando! It is September, and the weather has been a bit cooler and less humid. I’m sure we all welcome that! Today I’d like to tell you why microfiber mops are better than the old fashioned cotton mops.
Back in the day everyone used those big, white cotton mops to mop floors. I always think of those pirate movies showing them “swab the deck” with a huge cotton mop and barrel of water!
While many places still use them, microfiber mop heads are by far cleaner, easier to work with and the only type of mops we use here at Covenant Cleaning Services. Here’s why:
Microfiber mops trap and remove more dirt
Microfiber mops are made of dense, small fibers that reach into cracks and uneven surfaces of the floor, trapping 99.5% of dirt and germs. Cotton mops tend to just push dirt around, lifting only some of the dirt with each swab.
Because a microfiber flat mop head is fixed under a hard plastic top base, you can apply a lot of downward pressure to get stubborn coffee stains, dried up food and so on off, while the softness of the fibers will not damage the floor.
They are lint free so they will not leave residue behind. In fact if you have a small area or delicate floor surface you can spray mop the area with just some water or mild cleaning mixture and get up all the dirt without a bucket.
They use less water and require less cleaning chemicals
Microfiber mops hold a lot less water than cotton per bucket rinse, yet clean the floor better and you can use less cleaning chemicals. I think everyone will agree we need less chemicals in our homes and offices!
Also some floor surfaces, such as hardwood, laminate and others can suffer water damage if too much is used. A cotton mop throws a lot of water onto the floor and pushes it into corners, under appliances and so on.
Microfiber mops hold much less water per rinse, keeping the floor only as wet as it needs to be. So the floor dries faster, causes no water saturation to sensitive floor surfaces and saves on water.
Microfiber mops reach more hard to get to areas, leaving a cleaner floor
Covenant Cleaning Services Orlando uses commercial rectangular flat microfiber mop heads that go on mop sticks designed just for them. We get them from Unger cleaning supplies, a world leader in quality cleaning equipment.
The mop sticks are very versatile, letting you swivel them around and get into corners, under chairs and desk and more. Because they have sharp corners and flat edges you can really scrub the floor right next to carpet and not get it wet.
Cotton mops tend to knock things over, push dirt into corners instead of cleaning them out and get surrounding carpets wet while still not cleaning well at the edges. They just work better!!
Other uses for a microfiber mop
Besides mopping a floor, you can also use them dry as a dust mop. The fibers really capture fine dust and dirt well. Their small size gets into all those corners that dirt tends to build up, leaving your floor much cleaner.
Also since the mop head stick holds the microfiber mop flat and tight you can use it on walls to scrub them down, on elevated surfaces and so on. You can even use them to wash widows with a squeegee!
Can be washed many times, so we use a fresh clean one each time!
Because cotton mops are so big and bulky, cleaners who use them often just rinse them out well and reuse them for the next job. They can still have dirt, viruses, pet hair and allergens hidden in the fibers, that then get transferred to the next home or office cleaning job.
